Institut für Anatomie, Hörsaal
At the founding of the University of Leipzig in the year 1409, the medical faculty was of very little importance. It wasn’t until 1542 that a surgeon was being commited to hold lessons for the subject anatomy and some time later, in ther year 1704, the first anatomical theater was opened. It was located in the rooms oft he Paulinerkloster which stood on the area of today’s Augustusplatz.
In 1874 the institute was moved to a new building in today’s Liebigstraße outside of the then city center. Throughout the years the building’s been continually modernised to match the standards of the developing subject area until it was almost entirely destroyed in a grave air-raid in the night oft he 4th December 1943. Even though the extensive anatomical collection as well as the library were lost during the attack, education in anatomy continued.
On the same site a new building was erected which has been used for educational purposes since 1953. Architectually it resembles a historical anatomical theatre and offers space for over 500 students. In the year 2004 the entire teaching section was renovated and adjusted to the international standards of science.
Today, over 400 students study the composition oft he human body under optimal conditions. A multitude of students work on their PhD theses in the laboratories of the institute.
