At no time in his life Johann Sebastian Bach was granted the opportunity to travel to Vienna. But as a citizen of Leipzig he must have felt at least an indirect link to the city on the Danube, as his sovereign, the Elector Frederick Augustus II, was married to the emperor’s daughter, Maria Josepha, who came from Vienna. Bach honoured the electress with brilliant cantatas and in one such piece even had the Danube singing as an allegorical character. He also wrote arrangements of key works of Hapsburg court music, including some by the composers Kerll and Caldara. In their Bachfest programme, Orchester Wiener Akademie conducted by Martin Haselböck together with a select host of soloists present Bach’s view of Vienna to great effect.
