Marcel Ponseele has been one of the leading interpreters on the Baroque oboe for more than four decades. With great technical mastery and unfailingly moving intonation, he has enthralled audiences in innumerable concert appearances all over the world. The same can be said of his participation in the Baroque orchestras of Ton Koopman, Philippe Herreweghe and John Eliot Gardiner, as well as his performances with Ensemble Il Gardellino, which Ponseele co-founded in 1988 and of which he is the artistic director. His interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach’s oboe solos in cantatas, Passions and concertos are important milestones in historical performance practice. This is why Marcel Ponseele is to be awarded the 2025 City of Leipzig Bach Medal.
