Any musical setting of a text is an interpretation of that text. But also a transformation. A re-forming. Because a musical setting does more than illustrate the text: it adds a further, frequently non-narrative level. During composition, the text influences the music, makes it possible, induces it. But ultimately, thanks to the music the text is also perceived differently. What if all the texts were penned by the same person, Heinrich Heine? What if exactly the same text was interpreted by different composers? Over the centuries, has Heine’s text elicited any common notion? Listen!
