Erster Teil

1. Chor
Chor I, II, Sopran in repieno
Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen,
sehet – Wen? – den Bräutigam,
seht ihn – Wie? – als wie ein Lamm!
O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig
am Stamm des Kreuzes geschlachtet,
Sehet, – Was? – seht die Geduld,
allzeit erfunden geduldig,
wiewohl du warest verachtet.
Seht – Wohin? – auf unsre Schuld;
all Sünd hast du getragen,
sonst müssten wir verzagen.
Sehet ihn aus Lieb und Huld
Holz zum Kreuze selber tragen!
Erbarm dich unser, o Jesu!

Come, ye daughters, share my wailing,
see ye! – Whom? – the Bridegroom see!
see him – How? – a Lamb is he!
O Lamb of God, unspotted
upon the cross’s branch slaughtered,
Look ye, – What? – how patient he,
always displayed in thy patience,
how greatly wast thou despised.
see – Ah, where? – how guilty we;
all sin hast borne for us,
else we had lost all courage.
see ye him, for love of me
he himself his cross must carry!
Have mercy on us, O Jesus!
Sopran in repieno: Strophe 1 aus dem Lied »O Lamm Gottes« von Nikolaus Decius 1531 nach dem »Agnus Dei«

2. Rezitativ
Evangelist

When Jesus then had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples:
Jesus

The Passover is two days hence, that know ye all, and the son of man shall then be delivered up that they may crucify him.

3. Choral
Chor I, II
Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen,

Ah, Jesus, dear, what precept hast thou broken,
that such a cruel judgment has been spoken?
Oh what misdeed hast thou to make confession?
Of what transgression?

Then assembled the elders with the scribes and the chief priests also, and together came they all within the palace of the high priest, he whose name was Caiphas, and counselled there how that Jesus by craft be taken and put to death. But thus they said:

4b. Chor
Chor I, II

Not upon the feast, lest from it there be an uproar when it is known.

4c. Rezitativ
Evangelist

Now when Jesus sojourned in Bethany abiding with Simon the leper, came a woman there, and brought him a box of costliest ointment, and poured it on his head as Jesus sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it they had indignation and said:

4d. Chor
Chor I

For what purpose is this wasted? For a goodly sum this ointment might have been sold and been given the poor and the needy.

4e. Rezitativ
Evangelist

When Jesus had heard them thus, he said to them:
Jesus

Wherefore trouble ye her so? It is a good work that she has wrought. For always ye have the poor with you here, but me ye have not always with you. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, this she hath done that I may be buried so. Verily I say to ye: Wherever this gospel shall hereafter be preached throughout all the world the thing that this woman hath done shall be spoken in her remembrance.

5. Rezitativ
Alt
Du lieber Heiland du,
wenn deine Jünger töricht streiten,
dass dieses fromme Weib
mit Salben deinen Leib
zum Grabe will bereiten,
so lasse mir inzwischen zu,
von meiner Augen Tränenflüssen
ein Wasser auf dein Haupt zu gießen!

My dearest Saviour thou,
while thy disciples foolish quarrel
because this woman sought,
with precious ointment brought,
for burial to prepare thee,
like her let me anoint thee now,
and weeping in thy passion’s hour
upon thy head my blessings shower.

6. Arie
Alt
Buß und Reu knirscht das Sündenherz entzwei,
dass die Tropfen meiner Zähren
angenehme Spezerei,
treuer Jesu, dir gebären.

Woe and rue, tear my sinful heart in two.
Teardrops falling serve to show thee,
Jesus, once again,
what a mighty dept I owe thee.

7. Rezitativ
Evangelist

One of Jesus’ twelve disciples was known as Judas Iscariot; to the chief priests went he and said:
Judas
Was wollt ihr mir geben? Ich will ihn euch verraten.

What sum will ye give me and I will bring him to you?
Evangelist

And they promised him thirty silver pieces. And from that time sought he opportunity that he might betray him.

8. Arie
Sopran
Blute nur, du liebes Herz!
Ach! ein Kind, das du erzogen,
das an deiner Brust gesogen,
droht den Pfleger zu ermorden,
denn es ist zur Schlange worden.

Bleed thou must, beloved heart!
Ah, a child whom thou didst nourish,
at thy bosom fondly cherish,
foully ploys by craft to slay thee,
like a very snake betray thee.

9a. Rezitativ
Evangelist

Now on that day, the first of unleavened bread, came the disciples to Jesus, and said unto him:

9b. Chor
Chor I

Where wilt thou, Lord, that we shall all eat the Passover together?

9c. Rezitativ
Evangelist
Er sprach:

He said:
Jesus

Go ye into the city, find such a man and say: The Master bide us tell you; my time is at hand, at thy house will I keep the Passover with my disciples.
Evangelist

The disciples harkened, and did as Jesus to them had bidden, and they there prepared the Passover. And when even came he sat at the table with the twelve, and as they ate he told them:
Jesus

Verily I say to you: one of you who sit here shall betray me.

9d. Rezitativ
Evangelist

Then were they exceeding grieved, and they began to question him ev’ry one and to say unto him:

9e. Chor
Chor I
Herr, bin ichs?

Lord, not I?

10. Choral
Chor I, II
Ich bins, ich sollte büßen,
an Händen und an Füßen
gebunden in der Höll.
Die Geißeln und die Banden
und was du ausgestanden,
das hat verdienet meine Seel.

‘Tis I who should, repenting
in torture unrelenting,
endure the pains of hell.
The shackles and the scourges
thou bore from sin to purge us,
where by us all deserved full well.

11. Rezitativ
Evangelist
Er antwortete und sprach:

He answered to them and said:
Jesus

Who dippeth his hand with me in the dish this even, shall this night betray me. The son of man goeth on his way as of him it has been written: but woe unto that man by whom the son of man shall be betrayed. For him it were better, yes for that man ‘t were better had he not been born.
Evangelist

Judas then, which betrayed him, in answer spake and said:
Judas
Bin ichs, Rabbi?

Is it I?
Evangelist
Er sprach zu ihm:

He said to him:
Jesus
Du sagests.

Thou sayest.
Evangelist

And as they were eating he took of the bread, blessed and broke it up, and gave the disciples and said:
Jesus
Nehmet, esset, das ist mein Leib.

This is my body, take ye and eat.
Evangelist

And he took the cup, and giving thanks, he gave it them, and said:
Jesus

Drink ye all of it; this is my blood of the New Testament, which shall be shed for you, for many in remission of their sins. I say to you: From henceforth no more will I drink the fruit of the vine, no more will I drink of it ‘til on that Day I drink it new with you where my Father reigns on high above.

12. Rezitativ
Sopran
Wiewohl mein Herz in Tränen schwimmt,

Alas! my heart is bathed in tears
that Jesus’ dread departure nears,
yet doth his testament my soul uplift,
his flesh and blood, o precious gift,
bequeathed to me to keep and cherish.
As he was true on earth to those who loved him,
to them was faithless never,
so loves he all his own forever.

13. Arie
Sopran
Ich will dir mein Herze schenken,
senke dich, mein Heil, hinein!
Ich will mich in dir versenken;
ist dir gleich die Welt zu klein,
ei, so sollst du mir allein
mehr als Welt und Himmel sein.

Lord, my heart I gladly grant thee,
enter there, I ask of thee.
Deep in it would I emplant thee;
though this earth to thee be small,
thou shalt be my all in all,
more than earth and heav’n to me.

14. Rezitativ
Evangelist

And when they had sung a hymn of praise together, forth they went unto the Mount of Olives. Then saith Jesus to them:
Jesus

This very night ye shall be offended because of me. In the scripture is written: For lo, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But when I again am risen, then will I go before you to Galilea.

15. Choral
Chor I, II
Erkenne mich, mein Hüter,
mein Hirte, nimm mich an!
Von dir, Quell aller Güter,
ist mir viel Guts getan.
Dein Mund hat mich gelabet
mit Milch und süßer Kost,
dein Geist hat mich begabet
mit mancher Himmelslust.

Remember me my Saviour,
my shepherd take thou me;
the source of ev’ry blessing,
wilt thou forever be.
By thine abundance nourished,
with milk and honey blest,
thy spirit brings me comfort
and heav’nly joy and rest.
Strophe 5 aus dem Lied »O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden« von Paul Gerhardt 1656

16. Rezitativ
Evangelist
Petrus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihm:

Peter then gave him answer and said to him:
Petrus

Tho’ all men be offended because of thee, yet will I, Lord, be never offended.
Evangelist
Jesus sprach zu ihm:

Jesus said to him:
Jesus

Verily do I say: This very night, ere yet the cock croweth thou, Peter, thrice wilt deny me.
Evangelist
Petrus sprach zu ihm:

Peter said to him:
Petrus

Tho’ I should die with thee, my master, yet will I never deny thee.
Evangelist
Desgleichen sagten auch alle Jünger.

And likewise also said all the others.

17. Choral
Chor I, II
Ich will hier bei dir stehen;
verachte mich doch nicht!
Von dir will ich nicht gehen,
wenn dir dein Herze bricht.
Wenn dein Herz wird erblassen
im letzten Todesstoß,
alsdenn will ich dich fassen
in meinen Arm und Schoß.

I will here by thee stand now;
O put me not to scorn!
From thee will I go never,
while thee thy heart doth break.
When thy heart doth grow pallid
within death’s final stroke,
e’en then will I enfold thee
within my arms and lap.
Strophe 6 aus »O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden«

18. Rezitativ
Evangelist

Then came Jesus with them unto a garden, by name Gethsemane, and saith to his disciples:
Jesus

Sit ye now here and I will go up yonder and pray there.
Evangelist

He took with him Peter and also both the sons of Zebedee, and was very sad and very heavy. Then saith he unto them:
Jesus

Ah, my soul is troubled sore e’en unto death, tarry here and watch ye with me.

19. Rezitativ und Choral
Tenor, Chor II
O Schmerz!
Hier zittert das gequälte Herz;
Ach! meine Sünden haben dich geschlagen;
Er leidet alle Höllenqualen,
er soll vor fremden Raub bezahlen.
Ich, ach Herr Jesu, habe dies verschuldet,
was du erduldet.
Ach, könnte meine Liebe dir,
mein Heil, dein Zittern und dein Zagen
vermindern oder helfen tragen,
wie gerne blieb ich hier!

Ah, woe!
how trembles his tormented heart;
it sinks away, how pale his face and wan!
What is the cause of this thy tribulation?
Before the judge must he appear;
there is no help, no comfort near.
The sins were mine for which thou dost now suffer.
He suffers hellish pain and terrors.
Ah, he must pay for other’s errors.
Mine is the blame, o Lord, for thine affliction
‘tis I should bear it!
Ah, if my love my Saviour
a balm to soothe thy sorrow
or help to mitigate thine anguish,
how gladly bide I here!
Chor: Strophe 3 aus »Herzliebster Jesu«

20. Arie und Chor
Tenor, Chor II
Ich will bei meinem Jesu wachen,
so schlafen unsre Sünden ein.
Meinen Tod
büßet seine Seelennot;
sein Trauren machet mich voll Freuden.
Drum muss uns sein verdienstlich Leiden
recht bitter und doch süße sein.

Yea, I will watch with Jesus gladly,
So all our sins will fall asleep.
Tho’ I die,
naught have I to fear there-by;
his aching heart has brought me gladness.
His pain and woe and all his sadness,
how bitter, yet how sweet are they.

21. Rezitativ
Evangelist

And he went yet farther and falling down upon his face he prayed to God and said:
Jesus

My father, if it may be, do thou let pass this cup from me: yet not as I will, but as you wilt.

22. Rezitativ
Bass
Der Heiland fällt vor seinem Vater nieder;
dadurch erhebt er mich und alle
von unserm Falle
hinauf zu Gottes Gnade wieder.
Er ist bereit,
den Kelch, des Todes Bitterkeit
zu trinken,
in welchen Sünden dieser Welt
gegossen sind und hässlich stinken,
weil es dem lieben Gott gefällt.

The saviour falling down before his father;
thereby has raised up me and all,
from our curse and fall
uplifted us and gained us mercy.
He is prepared
to drink the bitter, bitter cup,
death’s chalice
with all the sins of mortals
filled and brimming o’er with hate and malice,
for thus it was that God hath willed.

23. Arie
Bass
Gerne will ich mich bequemen,
Kreuz und Becher anzunehmen,
trink ich doch dem Heiland nach.
Denn sein Mund,
der mit Milch und Honig fließet,
hat den Grund
und des Leidens herbe Schmach
durch den ersten Trunk versüßet.

Gladly will I, fear disdaining,
drink the cup without complaining,
drink it as my saviour did.
By his lips,
with milk and with honey flowing,
all its shame and bitterness
has been rid,
sweetness on its dregs bestowing.

24. Rezitativ
Evangelist

Now he came to his disciples and found them sleeping and saith to Peter:
Jesus

Could ye not then watch with me even for one hour? Watch ye and pray ye that ye enter not into temptation! Tho’ willing is the spirit the flesh is weak.
Evangelist

He went away once again, praying, thus he said:
Jesus

My father, if it must be that this cup pass not from me, except I shall drink it, let thy will then be done.

25. Choral
Chor I, II
Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit,
sein Will, der ist der beste,
zu helfen den’ er ist bereit,
die an ihn gläuben feste.
Er hilft aus Not, der fromme Gott,
und züchtiget mit Maßen.
Wer Gott vertraut, fest auf ihn baut,
den will er nicht verlassen.

What God resolves will he achieve.
his will is perfect ever;
he succours all who firm believe
and for the best endeavour.
Our help in need our God indeed,
with gentle moderation.
He chastens us; if him we trust
we need not fear damnation.
Strophe 1 des gleichnamigen Liedes von Herzog Albrecht von Preußen 1547

26. Rezitativ
Evangelist

And he came again and found them sleeping, for all their eyes were heavy with sleep. And he left them, and the third time he went away alone to pray again, and spake again the same words in prayer. Then came he to his disciples, and said to them:
Jesus

Ah! Are ye still sleeping and resting? See ye, the hour is at hand, and the son of man to the hands of sinners now shall be betrayed. Rise ye up, let us be going; look ye, he is here who does betray me.
Evangelist

And as he was speaking, came Judas, who was one of the twelve disciples, and with him came a great array, with swords and with staves, by the chief priests sent, and elders of the people. Now this same Judas, who betrayed him, had given to them a sign and said: »That one whom I shall kiss is he, him hold ye!« And straightway came he to Jesus and said:
Judas
Gegrüßet seist du, Rabbi!

All hail to thee, o master!
Evangelist
Und küssete ihn. Jesus aber sprach zu ihm:

And kiss’d him forthwith. Jesus spoke and said to him:
Jesus
Mein Freund, warum bist du kommen?

My friend, wherefore art thou come here?
Evangelist

Then came they unto him, and laid their hands on Jesus, and held him fast.

27a. Arie (Duett) und Chor
Sopran, Alt, Chor II
So ist mein Jesus nun gefangen.
Lasst ihn, haltet, bindet nicht!
Mond und Licht
ist vor Schmerzen untergangen,
weil mein Jesus ist gefangen.
Lasst ihn, haltet, bindet nicht!
Sie führen ihn, er ist gebunden.

Behold, my Jesus now is taken.
Loose him, halt ye, bind him not!
All is dark
and for grief creation shaken,
for my Jesus has been taken.
Loose him, halt ye, bind him not!
They bind him fast; ah they have bound him.

27b. Chor
Chor I, II
Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden?
Eröffne den feurigen Abgrund, o Hölle,
zertrümmre, verderbe, verschlinge, zerschelle
mit plötzlicher Wut
den falschen Verräter, das mördrische Blut!

Will lightning and thunder in ruin engulf them?
May hell’s fiery furnace in fury surround them,
devour them, defile them, destroy them, confound them,
the bloodthirsty horde,
the falsehearted traitor who murdered his Lord!

28. Rezitativ
Evangelist

Behold then, one of his disciples, which were there with Jesus, drew his sword and striking he smote the high priest’s serving man, and cut the man’s ear off. Then said Jesus to him:
Jesus
Es muss also gehen.

Put in its place thy sword again; for they that take the sword shall perish by the sword, for bethink ye now, were I to pray my father now to help me, he would straightway give me more then twelve legions of angels? But how then shall be fulfilled the scripture, that thus it must happen?
Evangelist

At the same time said Jesus to the people:
Jesus

Are ye come out here as if against a robber, with swords and with staves, that ye may take me? For have I not daily mingled with you and daily have taught in the temple, yet laid you not hold upon me. All of this was done and accomplished, to fulfill to the scriptures of the prophets.
Evangelist
Da verließen ihn alle Jünger und flohen.

Then did all the disciples flee and forsake him.

29. Choral
Chor I, II, Sopran in ripieno
O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß,
darum Christus seins Vaters Schoß
äußert und kam auf Erden;
von einer Jungfrau rein und zart
für uns er hie geboren ward,
er wollt der Mittler werden.
Den Toten er das Leben gab
und legt darbei all Krankheit ab,
bis sich die Zeit herdrange,
dass er für uns geopfert würd,
trüg unsrer Sünden schwere Bürd
wohl an dem Kreuze lange.

O man, bewail thy sins so great,
for which Christ did his Father’s lap
reveal and came to earth here;
and of a virgin pure and mild
for us he here to birth did come
to be the Intercessor.
Unto the dead he granted life
and put off all infirmity
until the time pressed forward
that he for us be sacrificed;
he bore our sins’ most grievous weight
upon the cross, long suff’ring.

30. Arie und Chor
Alt, Chor II
Ach, nun ist mein Jesus hin!
Wo ist denn dein Freund hingegangen,
o du Schönste unter den Weibern?
Ist es möglich, kann ich schauen?
Wo hat sich dein Freund hingewandt?
Ach! mein Lamm in Tigerklauen,
ach! wo ist mein Jesus hin?
So wollen wir mit dir ihn suchen.
Ach! was soll ich der Seele sagen,
wenn sie mich wird ängstlich fragen?
Ach! wo ist mein Jesus hin?

Ah, now is my Jesus gone.
Wither has thy dear one departed,
O thou fairest among women?
Ah my Jesus can I bear it?
Whither has thy friend gone away?
Ah! my lamb in tiger’s clutches!
Ah, where has my Jesus gone?
For we would go with you to seek him.
Ah! what say you spirit so weary?
What to ev’ry anxious query?
Ah! where has my Jesus gone?
Chor: Hoheslied 1, 6

31. Rezitativ
Evangelist

And they who had so laid hold on Jesus, took him and led him away to the high priest, Caiaphas, where with him were the scribes and the elders together all assembled. Peter yet awaited and afaroff followed, and with them came to the high priest’s palace; and went therein, and sat with the high priest’s servants, that he might witness, how it would be ending. The chief priests then, and all of the elders, too, and the council sought lying witnesses accusing Jesus, that he might be put to death, yet found they no one.

32. Choral
Chor I, II
Mir hat die Welt trüglich gericht’
mit Lügen und mit falschem Gdicht,
viel Netz und heimlich Stricke.
Herr, nimm mein wahr in dieser Gfahr,
bhüt mich für falschen Tücken!

The world, with treachery replete,
with lies and fraud and false deceit
would tangle and ensnare me.
Lord, keep thou me from danger free,
from evil malice spare me!

33. Rezitativ
Evangelist

Yea, tho’ many lying witnesses were offered, they could find them none. At last testified two false witnesses in this wise:

This fellow said: God’s temple can I raze and destroy it and again in three days build it.

Then the high priest rose from his seat and said to him:

Nought answerest thou to that which these have spoken against thee?

Mein Jesus schweigt
zu falschen Lügen stille,
um uns damit zu zeigen,
dass sein Erbarmens voller Wille
vor uns zum Leiden sei geneigt,
und dass wir in dergleichen Pein

und in Verfolgung stille schweigen.

He answers not,
to lying tongues is silent,
that thereby he may show us
how he, instead fast loving kindness,
for us with patience bears his lot,
so may we when in like distress
be steadfast nonetheless,
in persecution, suffer silent.

Leid ich wider meine Schuld
Schimpf und Spott,

Patient ever bear thy lot.
Shame and scorn, if with patience they be borne
rich reward from God will bring thee
lying tongues will know God’s vengeance!

Tho’ from thee temptation lured me,

Thy forgiveness is assured me

Now when morning came there was a council held of priests and elders of the people to plot against Jesus, to put him to death. When he was bound, led they him away that they might deliver him to the governor Pontius Pilate. Then he who betrayed him, the false disciple Judas when he saw that he was convicted, repented he himself, and brought to the temple the thirty silver pieces to the high priests and the elders and said:

And they took counsel among themselves and with the silver pieces bought a potters field for the burial of strangers. And therefore the field that they bought has been known as the field of blood, yea even unto this day. It was fulfilled thus as was prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah, when he said: »They took and they used the thirty silver pieces, the price of him that was valued, whom they did value, children they of Israel, and they gave them for a field which is called the potter’s field, as did the Lord, my God, appoint me.« Jesus stood then up before the governor; and the governor asked of him and said:

Hearest thou not, what they charge against thee?

And he answered him not, no never a word, not one, and therefore Pontius Pilate marvelled mightily.

Now the governor, at that feast had made it a custom that he released from prison the one for whom the people should ask him. It happened that there was there a notable prisoner, one whom all the people new well, whose name was Barabbas. And when they were met together, Pilate spake to them saying:
Pilatus

Whether will ye that I loose unto you now? Barabbas or this Jesus, the one whom all ye people call Christ?
Evangelist

For he knew full well, that for envy they had delivered him up. And when he took the judgment seat, come there from his wife to him a message, saying:
Uxor Pilati

Do thou have nought to do with that virtuous person, for I have suffered much this day in a dream, because of him!
Evangelist

Yet did the priests and elders stir the multitude, seeking over that they ask, and choose that Barabbas was released, and to crucify Jesus. To the multitude did then the governor speak and ask them:
Pilatus

For us he naught but good has done.
The blinded gave he back their sight,
the lame can walk aright;
the word of God to us he brought,

gave comfort to the mourning one,
from sin for us salvation won;

And after they had mocked him thus they took off from him the scarlet robe and put his own raiment on again, and they led him away, that he be crucified. And as they were going out they met there a man from Cyrene, whose name was Simon, and him did they compel to bear his cross.

And when in this wise they were come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say »the place of skulls«, then they gave him vinegar to drink that was mingled with gall, and when he tasted it, yet he would not drink it. And when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his garments and all did cast lots there for; that there might be accomplished that which by the prophets was spoken: »My garments they have parted, parted them among them, and for my vesture lots have they cast, yea lots cast for it.« Then they all sat them down, and watched Jesus there; and over his head they then set up an inscription, telling what was his accusation, written: »This is Jesus, the King of the Jews!« There were also two thieves who with him were crucified, one on the right hand, and one on the left hand. Many women were gathered there, from afar off beholding, which had followed after Jesus from Galilea, to minister unto him; and among them there was Mary Magdalene, also Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s two children. At even came a certain wealthy man from Arimathia, by name Joseph, who was also one of Jesus’ disciples. He went unto Pilate, and begged of him the body of Jesus, Pilate then commanded, that it be given to him.

Bass
Am Abend, da es kühle war,
ward Adams Fallen offenbar;
am Abend drücket ihn der Heiland nieder.
Am Abend kam die Taube wieder
und trug ein Ölblatt in dem Munde.
O schöne Zeit! O Abendstunde!
Der Friedensschluss ist nun mit Gott gemacht,
denn Jesus hat sein Kreuz vollbracht.
Sein Leichnam kömmt zur Ruh,
ach! liebe Seele, bitte du,
geh, lasse dir den toten Jesum schenken,
o heilsames, o köstlichs Angedenken!

At even, sweet, cool hour of rest,
was Adam’s fall made manifest.
At even ends the saviour’s cross and pain;
at even come the dove again,
with leaf of olive in her bill.
O lovely hour so cool and still!
Our peace with God is evermore assured,
for Jesus hath his cross endured.
His body rests in peace.
Ah, thank him ever, never cease,
soul, think thou of thy saviour, lying yonder,
o holy thought, o precious thought to ponder!

65. Arie
Bass
Mache dich, mein Herze, rein,
ich will Jesum selbst begraben.
Denn er soll nunmehr in mir
für und für
seine süße Ruhe haben.
Welt, geh aus, lass Jesum ein!

Let my heart be pure as thine,
there a precious grave I make thee.
Dwell thou there, whom I adore,
ever more,
there sweetest rest betake thee.
World away, come Jesus mine!

Evangelist

The body Joseph took, and wrapped it in a clean new linen cloth, and laid it in his own new grave which he had hewn from out of the solid rock; and rolled a mighty stone on front of the door of the sepulchre, and went away. There were there also Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, who sat near to Jesus’ grave. Now on the morrow, which followed the preparation, came then together all of the priests and all the Pharisees to Pilate, and said:

Sir, we bear it in mind, that that base deceiver said, when he was yet alive: »Upon the third day I will rise again in glory.« Do thou command, that they shall keep a watch for the space of these three days, lest his disciples come by night and steal him thence, and say to the folk: »From the grave and death is he arisen«; so would this last error be worse, yea, than the first one.

Evangelist
Pilatus sprach zu ihnen:

And Pilate said to them:
Pilatus

Ye have many watchmen; go your way, make your watch as sure as may be.
Evangelist

So forth they went, and the sepulchre made sure with watchmen, and they sealed it with a stone.

O selige Gebeine,
dass euch mein Fall in solche Not gebracht!
Mein Jesu, gute Nacht!

O precious blessed body,
look that my tears of penitence may show thee,
how my default has brought to thee such woe.
Lord Jesus, fare thee well!
Sopran, Chor II
Habt lebenslang
vor euer Leiden tausend Dank,
dass ihr mein Seelenheil so wert geacht’.
Mein Jesu, gute Nacht!

My thanks to thee
will flow a never ending stream,

Chor I, II
Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder
und rufen dir im Grabe zu:
Ruhe sanfte, sanfte ruh!
Ruht, ihr ausgesognen Glieder!
Euer Grab und Leichenstein
soll dem ängstlichen Gewissen
ein bequemes Ruhekissen
und der Seelen Ruhstatt sein.
Höchst vergnügt schlummern da die Augen ein.

Here at thy grave sit we all weeping,
and call thee as in grief we weep:
Sleep thou sweetly, sweetly sleep!
Rest, thou weary, tortured body!
Sleep thou sweetly, rest thou well!
Let thy tombstone and thy grave
be the sweet alleviation,
in our woe the consolation
which our weary spirits crave.
Sweetly sleep, sink to slumber sweet and deep.
