Thomaskantor Johann Sebastian Bach performed his St Mark Passion in Leipzig on Good Friday 1731. Bach’s music has been lost, but a print edition of the libretto was published by the poet Picander. This has made it possible to reconstruct a considerable number of the choruses and arias, as Bach made keen use of the parody technique. The biblical excerpts however – the Evangelist’s part and the turba choruses – have been definitively lost and in the past were replaced in a variety of ways. One such complementary piece is the striking »Evangelienmusik« for tenor, bass, choir, percussion and organ written in 1981 by the Leipzig composer Volker Bräutigam, which deliberately focuses on the stylistic contrast.
