No 89 St. Matthew Passion. A Ballet by John Neumeier

director: Thomas Grimm, Germany 2005, 211 min, presentation: Knut Elstermann
With his Hamburg Ballet company, the great American choreographer John Neumeier transformed the St Matthew Passion into a celebrated ballet that ranks among his most important works. He found convincing physical expression for this Passion music; in his creation, the Passion becomes a collective, human experience. This legendary choreography is still danced by a young, ever-renewed ensemble, but has also been immortalised in a meaningful film version. We show excerpts from a 2005 performance which provide an impression of the timelessness of this dance classic.
