In 1723, Bach took up his post of Thomaskantor in Leipzig with gusto and composed a new cantata for every Sunday. As Holy Week 1724 approached, it was a matter of course for him that he had to set standards with a new Passion. This was how the first version of his St. John Passion (BWV 245) came to be composed. Bach repeatedly returned to this work later and performed it at least a further three times – each time in a more or less modified version. At the 2019 Bach Festival, audiences will be treated to a performance featuring the UK Baroque ensemble, Solomon’s Knot, that takes a unique pleasure in music-making.
