The court of the dukes of Saxe-Weimar played a key role in the early career of Johann Sebastian Bach: when only 18 years old, he spent a few months there working as a violinist with the court orchestra, and five years later was appointed court organist and chamber musician. Thanks to the dukes’ copious and always up-to-date music library, while in Weimar Bach was able to study the latest developments in European music. He wrote arrangements of Italian instrument concertos – by Vivaldi or Torelli, for example – for organ or harpsichord. Today’s has both: the original compositions with an Italian maestro and Bach’s arrangements with a German prize winner of the Leipzig Bach Competition.
