»L’Orfeo«, the »favola in musica« written in 1607, is viewed as the »Big Bang« of modern opera. In it, Claudio Monteverdi, court kapellmeister to the Gonzagas in Mantua, pulled out all the stops of early Baroque expression, creating a work which was ideal for the stage both musically and dramatically. Not only does it recount the fate of the singer of Greek legend, Orpheus, it also tells of the irrepressible power of music, which succeeds in placating the Underworld and exerting an influence on people’s souls. With Jordi Savall, this Bach Festival production of »L’Orfeo« will be conducted by a man who for half a century has been a firm guarantor of lively and innovative performances of ancient music.
