After the St. John Passion, another major choral work by the Thomaskantor features on the programme of the Leipzig Ballet in the shape of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat. Bach’s setting of this biblical song of praise by Mary was his first large-scale composition for Leipzig and in writing it he created a work full of revolutionary strength: in it, Mary praises the God who raises up the poor and the hungry, and ousts the rich and powerful. In his choreographic premiere, ballet director and head choreographer Mario Schröder not only continues his exploration of Bach’s music, but also explores the latter’s artistic legacy, at the same time consciously drawing parallels with modernity.
