To raise his somewhat sinking popularity with the people, King George of England organized an extravagant show in 1717: he staged a pleasure trip for his court down the Thames, to be accompanied by splendid music. George Frideric Handel, who in the past few years had carved out an outstanding reputation for himself as a composer of operas in London, was commissioned to compose the music. A huge crowd followed the event from the banks of the Thames; Handel’s »Water Music« received so much applause that it had to be encored twice over. Ten years earlier, Handel had composed the dramatic cantata »Delirio amoroso« in Rome during his voyage to Italy.
