In October 2015, UNESCO included the autograph score of Johann Sebastian Bach’s B minor Mass in the Memory of the World Register. In doing so, it honoured Bach's extraordinary compositional skill that still exercises an »inspiring influence on mankind« 250 years after it was written. The special place occupied by the B minor Mass was acknowledged at a relatively early stage of Bach reception. While most of Bach’s other vocal works were still completely unknown, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms, among others, took a deep interest in the score. To this day, the B minor Mass remains one of the most popular works of church music, the numerous performances always opening new insights into its inner content.
