Bach’s St. Matthew Passion was referred to as »the great Passion« even by his own household. Its exceptional status among Bach’s oratorios and for his time is undisputed, and this is also reflected in the reception of the work. This is why staged performances of the St. Matthew Passion have been produced on a number of occasions over the past decades, such as the ballet version by John Neumeier, or the staged productions by Götz Friedrich and Peter Sellars. This year’s Bach Festival presents a new stage production by Gregor Horres and Stephanie Koch under the musical direction of Karin Freist-Wissing in St. Peter’s Church. Critics heaped praise on this production after its premiere in Bonn. The moving drama leaves no heart untouched.
