In the early eighteenth century, French music was highly prized throughout Europe – the glittering court of the Sun King served as a model for many princes and dukes. As court organist in Weimar and court kapellmeister in Köthen, Johann Sebastian Bach too composed much music in the French style, such as the mighty »Pièce d’Orgue« in G and the Orchestral Suite in D Major, the overture of which he later, as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, literally built into the opening chorus of a Christmas cantata. With Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s »Te Deum«, the music of Monsieur Bach in the opening concert will also be juxtaposed with an original French masterpiece.
