Exactly 400 years ago, in 1618, Leipzig’s Thomaskantor Johann Hermann Schein composed one of his most splendid sacred concertos, the 24-part German Te Deum, »Herr Gott, dich loben wir«. The occasion for this opulent piece of festive music was the marriage of Dorothea Sophia Möstel, the daughter of the mayor in office. A good one hundred years later, Johann Sebastian Bach compiled his Missa in F major, using musical material from any number of his cantatas for the purpose. The chorale concerto, »Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich«, written another 100 years later by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, reflects the composer’s great indebtedness to Bach.
