Two of J. S. Bach’s most beautiful cantatas form the framework for this concert. The chorale cantata »Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern« was composed for the feast of the Annunciation. The advent of Christ on earth is reflected in the Advent cantata, »Lasset uns ablegen die Werke der Finsternis«, with its jubilant trumpets, by W. F. Bach. The cantata »Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden« which celebrates Jesus’ resurrection, closes the concert. Linking these three works are two instrumental pieces composed specially for the Bach Festival by Steffen Schleiermacher. In celebration of the city’s 1,000th anniversary, a bridge is thus built that spans no fewer than 300 years of music in Leipzig and provides a new reflection on current connections with the music of Bach.
