The annual cycle of cantatas 1724/25

The annual cycle of chorale cantatas is Johann Sebastian Bach’s most ambitious composition project. Starting on the First Sunday after Trinity 1724, Bach wrote a cantata, the text and music of which were based on a chorale appropriate to the Gospel reading, every Sunday and feast day. The verses of the chorale were either taken verbatim or poetically reworked. After 40 weeks and as many cantatas, the cycle breaks off abruptly; it is presumed that the librettist died. To complete the gigantic project despite this, Bach added a few further chorale cantatas to them in subsequent years. Around one-third of this extraordinary repertoire can be heard at the 2017 Bach Festival, one theme being the cantatas based on Luther’s chorales.

Cantata Day

The performances of the cantatas of the second annual cycle will reach its peak during our »Cantata Day« which will be held for the second time during the Leipzig Bach Festival. Cantata Day will allow concertgoers to hear within just a few hours of one another ten chorale cantatas  – and to compare the different ways of using chorales in them.
